Mentor you right OUT of your goals and dreams because it doesn't suit THEIR goals and ambitions. YOUR job is to help THEM to get credit for YOUR hard work and THEIR big fat bonus!

Also working (unpaid) overtime to impress your boss or colleagues is foolish. Would you go to work if you wouldn't get paid? Of course not.

Internal politics at work can be thinly disguised as mentoring. When you look good, other people may look bad, so they'll try to talk you out of it.
