Nicolas Cole, interesting point of view. That employers care about our dreams and aspirations.
Whether we are Gen X, millennial, baby boomer etc, they care about themselves and their bottom line. HR will send you an employment contract some 20–30 pages long. You must sign and return before your employment even starts.
When you start on your first day, given some Orientation to the company, get sat on your desk. IT set up your email, then you’re expected to work.
You’re given your KPIs for the month and you get to work. If you’re lucky, you’ve got a nice manager. But he/she is under pressure too.
I’m not saying don’t have dreams. Not at all. If you expect your employer to care, check in with you every day or week, how much progress you’ve made, you’d be disappointed.
Some workplaces like Google & Netflix may sound like fun but underneath it all, is the understanding that you must perform.
You will quit, then start somewhere else, expecting special treatment. Why not roll your sleeves up, get to work and make something of yourself in your career there?
Who knows you may achieve your goal? If your dream is to become the boss or CEO of your company, don’t tell them!
Any private goals you have, you can explore after work or weekend. If you have any energy left.
That’s why some people don’t like working for others. Too many rules, not enough freedom, not enough recognition.
